Recently, in Chengdu, a newborn baby stayed at a postpartum care center for only 4 days before suddenly experiencing intracranial hemorrhage, and is currently receiving treatment in the ICU.
According to the Sichuan Observer, on July 8th, a pregnant woman in Chengdu, Sichuan, gave birth to a baby girl at the Women and Children’s Hospital of the city. Three days after delivery, both the mother and the baby passed all examinations with flying colors and were discharged smoothly. On the same day, they checked into the scheduled Shiyue Xin Postpartum Care Center.
The child’s mother, Mrs. Zhou, stated that on the fourth day of their stay at the center, she noticed something was wrong with her baby. The baby refused to breastfeed and appeared lethargic.
Upon examination by doctors, it was revealed that the baby had intracranial hemorrhage and needed immediate transfer to the ICU for treatment.
After moving into the postpartum care center, the baby had been under the care of the center’s staff the entire time. In order to identify the cause of the illness, the family retrieved surveillance footage from the center, which revealed that the caregivers had behaved violently towards the infant. Mrs. Zhou said, “Our baby was crying at that time, and she (the caregiver) directly slapped the baby. In such a situation where my baby was crying, she shouted near the baby’s ear, and even held the baby tightly while shaking her forcefully. As a mother, I really wanted to rush into the surveillance video.”
Mr. Zou, the child’s father, mentioned that the treatment has already cost over 90,000 yuan, with a daily ICU fee of over 3,000 yuan. The child will need to undergo several surgeries in the future, along with a lengthy recovery process, causing immense financial pressure on the family.
Following the incident, the family has approached the Shiyue Xin Postpartum Care Center multiple times for discussions, and the center has stated that they will determine the responsibility after the results of a third-party appraisal.
When contacted, the person in charge surnamed Yang of the center refused to respond, stating “no comment” four consecutive times.
On January 18th of this year, a newborn baby in Longhua, Shenzhen, who was only 6 days old, was accidentally dropped and suffered intracranial hemorrhage at the Longhua Baoyuan Postpartum Care Center, leading to emergency treatment in the ICU.
In early April, the wife of Mr. Li, a resident of Wuhan, gave birth to twins who were only 3 days old. One of the newborns was inadvertently dropped by a nanny from the postpartum care center, causing intracranial hemorrhage due to negligence in care. Although the baby was out of danger, medical personnel stated that due to the infants being too small and the head being injured, it is currently unclear whether there will be long-term effects on the child’s future intelligence, nervous system, or physical growth and development.
