On September 9, Inner Mongolia’s former top official, Sun Shaocheng, was officially announced to have been expelled from the Communist Party and dismissed from public office, and is now facing judicial proceedings. Sun Shaocheng had fallen from grace at the end of January this year while serving as the Deputy Director of the Social Construction Committee of the Fourteenth National People’s Congress, becoming the seventh senior official to be investigated and announced in China this year.
According to a report from the website of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China and the National Supervisory Commission on September 9, Sun Shaocheng was expelled from the party, removed from public office, his qualifications as a delegate to the Twentieth National Congress revoked, and referred to judicial authorities.
The report stated that Sun Shaocheng had failed to fully implement major decisions of the Party Central Committee, engaged in favoritism and rule-bending, resisted organizational reviews, and participated in superstitious activities. He accepted gifts in violation of regulations, frequented private clubs in violation of rules, accepted invitations that could compromise the impartial execution of official duties, and indulged in luxury. He did not truthfully disclose issues in response to inquiries from the organization, improperly sought personal gain for others in promotions and hiring of staff, allowed and tacitly approved his children to exploit his position for personal gain, utilized his authority for the benefit of relatives’ business operations, interfered improperly in judicial activities, had corrupt family influences and failed to manage and educate his family properly.
Sun Shaocheng, born in July 1960 in Haiyang, Shandong Province, previously held positions such as Deputy Minister and Party member of the Ministry of Civil Affairs, Vice Governor of Shandong Province, Standing Committee Member and Minister of the United Front Work Department of Shanxi Province, Standing Committee Member and Deputy Governor of Shanxi Province, Deputy Minister of Civil Affairs and Deputy Secretary of the Party Group.
In 2017, Sun Shaocheng served as the Party Secretary and Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Land and Resources, and in March 2018, he became Minister and Party Secretary of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs. In April 2022, Sun Shaocheng was appointed as the Secretary of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Party Committee, and he stepped down in September 2025, later serving as the Deputy Director of the Social Construction Committee of the Fourteenth National People’s Congress.
