British man killed after entering tiger enclosure, zoo announces fate of tiger

In a shocking incident at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in England’s Yorkshire County, a man in his twenties illegally entered the tiger enclosure and was fatally attacked by a tiger named Altai, a critically endangered Siberian tiger. The man tragically succumbed to his injuries on the spot, sparking international attention and concern. The park management released an official statement on Sunday, revealing the final disposition and fate of the involved tiger.

The park clarified in their statement that Altai, the tiger involved in the attack, did not sustain any injuries during the incident and did not escape the enclosure, posing no threat to public safety. They expressed gratitude to everyone who showed concern and extended sincere condolences to the family of the deceased man. Additionally, the park confirmed that Altai is safe and will not be euthanized as a result of the incident.

According to a statement from the South Yorkshire Police, the incident occurred around 1:35 pm local time on Saturday, October 10th. Multiple eyewitnesses described the man’s unusual behavior leading up to the incident to mainstream media.

Reportedly, the man, who was alone, asked other visitors before entering the enclosure if they could take a photo of him with the tiger. Witnesses further detailed that the man was wearing AirPods and appeared to be dancing along to music on the walkway before voluntarily jumping or climbing into the tiger enclosure.

When emergency personnel and police arrived at the scene, the man had already sustained severe injuries from the tiger and was pronounced dead on-site. Gunshots were heard at the time of the incident, with BBC later clarifying that the sounds were only to drive the tiger away, allowing medical personnel to safely access the enclosure to provide aid to the man, and not to shoot the tiger on the spot.

Following the incident, the park promptly evacuated visitors and closed the premises. Authorities urged the public not to share or circulate any videos of the incident circulating on social media out of respect for the deceased and his family.

Opened in 2009, the Yorkshire Wildlife Park’s popular attraction “Land of the Tigers” was established in 2011. Spanning approximately 2 acres, the area is dedicated to the conservation of endangered Siberian tigers, featuring woodlands, grasslands, waterfall pools, and a 300-meter-long elevated walkway for visitors to observe.

Altai, the tiger involved, is approximately 3 to 4 years old and originated from the Dyreparken in Norway. He was officially introduced to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in March 2025 as part of the European Endangered Species Programme, joining the resident female tiger Tschuna in global breeding and conservation efforts.

Siberian tigers are the largest big cats in the world and are currently classified as an endangered species. The park is temporarily closed, and the specific reasons behind the man’s illegal entry into the enclosure are still under investigation by the South Yorkshire Police.
