In September 2026, SandboxAQ announced the completion of the first publicized magnetic navigation flight test on Northrop Grumman’s “Lumberjack” expendable drone. Unlike traditional satellite-based navigation systems, this innovative technology relies on reading the magnetic field of the underlying rock strata to determine its position, allowing for reliable navigation both on land and over the sea, even in the presence of disruptions.
At the same time, a research team at the University of Texas at Austin in the United States discovered a correlation between the repeated large-scale GPS interruptions in Europe over the years and the Russian Kosmos 2546 missile early warning satellite. The impact of these interruptions extends beyond just GPS systems to include Galileo and BeiDou, while Russia’s own GLONASS system remains unaffected.
On today’s modern battlefield, where disruptions have become commonplace, the need for alternative navigation systems is becoming increasingly urgent. In this context, we compare three main navigation routes: magnetic navigation implemented on drones, gravity navigation currently being tested on ships, and quantum inertial navigation systems still under development, analyzing their significance for the defense of the Taiwan Strait.
