In Kansas, the saying goes, “all things have spirits”, and this includes dogs. Recently, in Leawood, Kansas, a small dog demonstrated extraordinary loyalty and intelligence when its owner collapsed and couldn’t get up. The dog ran to the road, stopped a police officer, and led the officer back home to save its owner. This heartwarming act by the faithful dog earned praise from the police department.
The incident took place on September 17th in Leawood, Kansas. The Leawood Police Department shared the footage captured by the police officer’s body-worn camera on social media.
Late at night, a police officer on patrol in a residential area noticed a small dog standing in the middle of the road, barking non-stop. The officer saw a leash attached to the dog but couldn’t locate its owner.
From the camera footage, it can be seen that the officer immediately got out of the car to investigate and asked the dog, “Why don’t you go back home?” The dog then turned and walked in a certain direction, seemingly leading the officer, occasionally stopping and looking back to ensure the officer followed.
The police officer followed the dog for about half a block and encountered another dog with a leash, patiently waiting for its companion to return. Behind them was an open garage door with a car parked inside.
Approaching the house, the officer greeted the dogs, “Hey guys, do you live here?” The dogs continued to bark intermittently.
Upon closer inspection, the officer found their owner lying on the garage floor unable to get up, having been in that state for over three hours.
The Leawood Police Department praised the dog that guided the officer to rescue the owner, describing it as a “loyal companion” to its owner. Thanks to the dog, the police were able to find the person in need of assistance. The owner received medical treatment and is currently recovering at home.
The Leawood Police Department stated in their post, “Sometimes, our four-legged friends know exactly what to do.”
In a similar incident in Stevens County, Washington, back in September 2024, an 84-year-old man fell at home, unable to move. His dog ran to seek help, leading passing police officers to the house, ultimately saving the man’s life. Such stories of loyal dogs seeking help from police to save their owners continue to inspire and remind us of the incredible bond between humans and animals.
