On Friday, October 9, a flight bound for New York City was forced to divert to Miami International Airport due to severe turbulence. This incident resulted in at least 8 people being injured.
Avianca Flight 042 departed from Medellin, Colombia, and landed in Miami at around 3:30 am local time on Friday.
A spokesperson for the Miami-Dade Aviation Department informed Fox News Digital that after 8 injured passengers were taken to local hospitals, the remaining passengers departed for New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport at 8:15 am on Friday.
According to CBS News, officials at Miami International Airport stated that Avianca Flight 042 was originally headed to John F. Kennedy International Airport but encountered severe turbulence en route.
Airline officials told CBS News Miami bureau that a total of 3 crew members and 6 passengers were “injured or experienced health issues.” The extent of their injuries is not yet clear. A passenger present at Miami International Airport at the time witnessed the flight’s arrival. She mentioned seeing several ambulances on standby to assist the injured.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the United States stated that they will be conducting an investigation into the incident.
