Former Vice President of China Everbright Bank, Hou Weidong, has been transferred to judicial authorities

Former vice president of Bank of Communications, Hou Weidong, has been expelled from the Communist Party and referred to the judicial authorities more than half a year after his fall from grace. Last October, he was officially announced to have fallen from his position.

On May 7th, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China and the National Supervisory Commission notified that Hou Weidong, former member of the Party Committee and vice president of Bank of Communications Limited, has been expelled from the Party, had his benefits revoked, and has been sent to the judiciary for prosecution.

According to the report, Hou Weidong resisted organizational review, engaged in superstitious activities, accepted banquets and arranged travel in violation of regulations, failed to report personal matters as required, used his position to benefit others and received bribes during employee recruitment and job promotions. He also illegally accepted gifts, cash, and cards, borrowed large sums of money from managed and serviced entities, misused his authority in the allocation of financial technology resources for personal gain, engaged in corrupt transactions, and used his position to profit from project contracts and loan financing for others, as well as illegally accepting a large amount of money.

On the same day, the Vice Chairman of the Xinjiang Political Consultative Conference, Jin Zhizhen, was also announced to have been expelled and referred to the judicial authorities.

Up to now, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission of China have announced the disciplinary actions and referral to the judiciary of 20 middle-ranking cadres who have fallen from grace in 2026.

Previously, 18 individuals were disciplined, including Feng Zhibin, Liu Shaoyong, Xu Chuanzhi, Zhou Xianwang, Wu Shenghua, Gao Yichen, Ni Qiang, Han Song, Gao Xingfu, Lin Jingzhen, Wang Lixia, Tang Dezhi, Jiang Deguo, Liu Hui, Wu Lan, Jiang Duntao, Han Zhanwu, and Yi Huiman.

Public information shows that Hou Weidong, born in January 1960 in Zibo, Shandong province, holds a doctoral degree in economics and is a senior engineer.

From November 1998 to April 2002, Hou Weidong served as Vice General Manager of the Technical Support Department and General Manager of the Data Center at Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, and as Deputy General Manager of the Computer Department at Bank of Communications.

From April 2002 to December 2010, he held positions as Deputy General Manager of the Computer Department, General Manager of the Information Technology Department, and Chief Information Officer at Bank of Communications. He also served as General Manager of the IT Department, CIO, Party Committee Member, and Vice President at Bank of Communications.

Since December 2010, Hou Weidong served as Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Bank of Communications (resigned from the latter position in January 2017). He also concurrently served as Chairman of CIIC Bank Life Insurance Co., Ltd. since 2014, as an Executive Director at Bank of Communications since October 2015, and resigned as Chairman of CIIC Bank Life Insurance Co., Ltd. in 2018.

In April 2020, Bank of Communications announced that due to age reasons, Hou Weidong had resigned from various positions within the bank.

On the night of October 28, 2025, he was officially announced to have fallen from his position.
