Interview with Shen Boyang: Creating a Livable and Hopeful Taipei

In a recent interview with Epoch Times, Shen Boyang, the Democratic Progressive Party’s candidate for mayor of Taipei, Taiwan, expressed that the biggest issue in Taipei’s governance is the lack of planning. However, he believes that a city can have a “brain,” proposing the establishment of the Taipei Institute in Beitou, to create a Taipei that can be described as “livable, companionable, and hopeful.”

Shen mentioned that despite his limited political experience, his strength lies in strong execution, although he admitted that he needs more sleep and is still adjusting. He emphasized that although his political experience may be shallow, his extensive practical experience has allowed him to consider “execution power” as his strong suit. In his municipal governance, he plans to uphold core principles such as national security, child protection, respect for professionalism, and reliance on experts to drive policies.

Looking towards the future of Taipei, Shen summarized his city vision with the three words “livable, companionable, hopeful.” Firstly, “livable” means creating a city where people feel relaxed and suitable for living, with art and cultural corridors, activity venues, etc. Second is “companionable.” Shen highlighted the importance of companionship in combating feelings of loneliness, which may stem from reasons like entrepreneurship or caring for family members. By implementing policies like community centers and parent-child companion cards, the aim is to prevent isolation.

Lastly, “hopeful.” Shen emphasized the importance of informing people about the future music, AI, and other policies of the city, so that individuals can grasp the potential developments ahead. The “nine-in-one” local elections in Taiwan are scheduled for November 28. In the capital city of Taipei, Shen Boyang, a DPP candidate and incumbent legislator, has worked on transforming his image since announcing his candidacy. With his campaign team slogan “Ocean Current,” Shen has posed a challenge to the incumbent mayor, prompting a rise in momentum since September.

This election is not only seen as a midterm assessment for President Lai Ching-te but also a precursor to the 2028 presidential election.
