Chief of Xinda Securities Research Institute Accused of Sexual Harassment of Subordinates Taken Away for Investigation

On March 25th, a formal complaint letter circulated online, bringing attention to the alleged sexual misconduct by Zuo Qianming, the director and chief energy analyst of Xinda Securities Research Institute. The complainant, Tang Chanyu, who joined Xinda Securities Research Institute in 2023 and is currently a researcher, accused Zuo Qianming of behaving inappropriately towards her after a dinner in Shanghai on the night of March 24th.

According to the complaint, Zuo Qianming initially touched Tang Chanyu’s hand under the pretext of “you seem tense, relax”, and then proceeded to touch her private parts. Despite Tang Chanyu’s resistance and efforts to push him away, Zuo Qianming persisted in his advances. Upon reaching the hotel, Zuo Qianming even in front of others, grabbed her and demanded that she “come to his room”, causing Tang Chanyu to panic and flee the hotel. Zuo Qianming caught up with her, forcibly pushed her into a taxi parked outside the hotel, where Tang Chanyu struggled, screamed for help, and resisted his actions. Zuo Qianming held her tightly, saying, “a shot will make you feel better,” further escalating Tang Chanyu’s fear.

At that moment, a hotel security guard intervened, restraining Zuo Qianming from behind, allowing Tang Chanyu to break free and seek refuge in a nearby hotpot restaurant, where she reported the incident to the police. Tang Chanyu learned during the police call that with the assistance of the security guard, Zuo Qianming had been taken into custody by the authorities.

In the complaint letter, Tang Chanyu stated that she had provided detailed statements to the police, and that hotel security and restaurant staff could serve as third-party witnesses, with surveillance footage of public areas being processed as evidence. She emphasized her responsibility for every word in her statement and expressed her refusal to settle the matter privately.

Accompanying the complaint letter was a police report receipt from Shanghai, which aligned closely with the details described in the complaint, confirming that Zuo Qianming had indeed been taken in by the police for investigation.

Public records indicate that Zuo Qianming, a Ph.D. graduate from China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing), previously held positions in the China Coal Industry Association before joining Xinda Securities in 2016. In July 2025, he was appointed as the director of Xinda Securities Research Institute and chief energy analyst, enjoying a strong reputation within the industry and having won several awards as the best analyst from New Fortune magazine.

Investigations by New Yellow River reporters revealed that Zuo Qianming and Tang Chanyu had previous professional interactions. Records from research platforms show that they co-authored a research report on “Shan Natural Gas” in June 2025.

In response to the allegations, officials from Xinda Securities stated that the company is aware of the situation circulating online, and has suspended all of Zuo Qianming’s duties while initiating an internal investigation. They also pledged full cooperation with the police in their inquiry.
