New Year’s Day in Xishuangbanna hit by 4.6 magnitude earthquake, residents say “terrified”

On the first day of the Chinese New Year, a 4.6-magnitude earthquake occurred in Jinghong City, Xishuangbanna, Yunnan late at night. Many residents reported feeling strong tremors and the walls shaking. Some people ran outdoors to take shelter, while others expressed being frightened by the quake.

According to the official measurement by the China Earthquake Networks Center, the earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 struck Jinghong City in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan at 23:05 on February 17. The quake had a depth of 10 kilometers, with the epicenter located at 22.12 degrees north latitude and 100.82 degrees east longitude.

Villages within a 5-kilometer radius of the epicenter include Manzhang, Manzhang Village Dai Ethnic Living Experience Building, Manmiguzhai, Gangbian Village, Huihui, Manman, Manting, Kungyang, Mengyang Jiangbian Village, and Kungyang Group. Towns within a 20-kilometer radius include Gasuo Town, Mengyang Town, Gadong Township, Jinghong Town.

The epicenter is 12 kilometers from Jinghong City, 42 kilometers from Menghai County, 76 kilometers from Simao District, 104 kilometers from Lancang Lahu Autonomous County, 106 kilometers from Mengla County, 13 kilometers from Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, and 379 kilometers from Kunming City.

The average altitude within a 5-kilometer radius of the epicenter is about 929 meters.

Videos circulating online show residents running outdoors to seek shelter after the earthquake struck.
