On the upcoming Double Tenth National Day of the Republic of China, the Presidential Office in celebration of the National Day will host a light show exhibition reflecting on Taiwan’s democratic journey over the past 30 years. The exhibition will take place on Ketagalan Boulevard from the 7th to the 10th of October, from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm with a show every half an hour. The lighting ceremony on the 7th will commence at 7:30 pm.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of direct presidential elections in Taiwan. The theme of the Presidential Office’s light show exhibition for the National Day is “Democratic Taiwan, the Heartbeat of the World”, visually representing Taiwan’s democratic development from the 1980s democracy movement to the recent “Team Taiwan” enthusiasm, leading the audience to revisit Taiwan’s democratic journey.
The Chinese Culture Association has gathered professionals from various fields to portray Taiwan’s daily life scenes, from market stalls to traditional window decorations, from dining culture to the iconic bubble milk tea, symbolizing Taiwan’s unique cultural confidence. Renowned film editor Lin Yongyi has reconstructed 11 films depicting different eras and democratic processes in Taiwan, such as “A City of Sadness” and “The Rebels of the Neon God”, incorporating pivotal moments in Taiwan’s democratic history along with materials from artists like Huang Tu-shui and Chen Cheng-po.
The Chinese Culture Association selected 4 songs that embody the essence and spirit of the land and era as the background music for the exhibition. These songs include “Goodnight, Taiwan” by Sodagreen, “Dark Hypnosis of the Great Fog” by 9m88, “Chrysanthemum Night March” by Apartment Band, and “Senasenai a mapuljat for Singing to Each Other” by Dai Xiao-jun Sauljaljui, each representing different periods of Taiwan and showcasing the collective memories of different regions.
Actress and writer Lian Yuhan has provided the voiceover narration for the 2026 National Day Presidential Office light show exhibition, with Xiaodongyi serving as the director. Lian Yuhan’s gentle and contemporary voice guides the audience through Taiwan’s democratic journey over the past 30 years and everyday life scenes of the common people.
Sharing through the Chinese Culture Association, Lian Yuhan expressed that she rarely goes to crowded places and has always enjoyed watching the National Day light shows online. Her favorite edition was the 2024 show, themed “When We Are Together”, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Taiwan’s first hero comic book author Ye Hongjia with a presentation of various new-generation comic artists, showcasing the diversity of Taiwan’s original comics.
Regarding her involvement in democratic movements, Lian Yuhan mentioned, “I did participate in voting.” Emphasizing that she has been voting every time since she was eligible, she also revealed that an upcoming movie has deepened her understanding of Taiwan’s democracy, encouraging everyone to stay tuned for more updates.
