Guangdong Vanke Financial Building Suddenly Shakes, Citizens: Feels Like Being on a Boat

Recently, the A building of Vanke Financial Center in Chancheng, Foshan, Guangdong suddenly shook, prompting the evacuation of people from upstairs to downstairs.

A video circulated online showed that on the afternoon of June 24th, the A building of Vanke Financial Center continued to shake, with glass doors and water bottles inside the building violently swaying. People upstairs were seen evacuating to the lower floors. One person was quoted saying, “The whole place is shaking.”

According to a report from Guangdong Radio and Television’s livelihood channel on the 25th, witnesses stated that around 12:20 noon on the 24th, before a heavy rain, the building started shaking, leading many individuals to descend to the lower floors. By around 3:30 pm, the shaking intensified significantly, prompting many more to come down.

An informant mentioned that next to the A building of Vanke Financial Center, there are also B and C buildings, and a few years ago, there was a sinkhole incident during their construction.

On the 25th, the Chancheng District Housing, Urban and Rural Construction, and Water Affairs Bureau of Foshan City reported that around 3 pm on the 24th, shaking occurred at the Vanke Financial Center’s A building in its jurisdiction, leading some personnel inside the building to evacuate. After an initial investigation, no significant damage to the main structure of the building or cracking of the surrounding area was found.

Reporting from “Jiaodian Video” under the Henan Business Daily stated that many employees in the building thought it was an “earthquake.” Some residents even compared the shaking to being on a boat.

According to Southern Metropolis Daily’s report, the building in question shook, but neighboring buildings did not. Citizens working in the B and C sections of the financial center mentioned that they did not feel any obvious vibrations or shaking. Staff from the earthquake agency also confirmed that there was no earthquake in Foshan and the surrounding areas around 3:30 pm.

Netizens commented, “This is a relatively new building constructed just a few years ago!” “The underground structures of big cities are riddled with holes. One day, it might just collapse.”

Public records show that the total construction area of the financial center is about 420,000 square meters, consisting of three office buildings. The A building was put into use in 2015, while the B and C buildings were officially opened in early 2020.
