Temple City “Police-Citizen Coffee Day” – Easily Understandable in National, Cantonese and Taiwanese Languages

Los Angeles County’s Temple City Police Department held its annual “Coffee with a Cop Day” on Tuesday, April 16th. The event aimed to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community through casual and pleasant conversations, with the goal of enhancing community cohesion and creating a harmonious atmosphere to collectively maintain local public safety.

Currently, there are multiple police officers in Temple City who are proficient in Mandarin, Hokkien, and Cantonese. Chinese residents can report incidents without worrying about language barriers. The attending officers emphasized that they can communicate in Mandarin, Cantonese, and Taiwanese. The department also has many volunteer translators who speak Mandarin and can assist residents in directly communicating their thoughts and suggestions to the police, enabling them to stay informed of the latest developments.

Local coffee shops collaborated with law enforcement to promote the event, displaying promotional materials both inside and outside the shops to attract passersby. Officers warmly welcomed and served participants, offering complimentary hot coffee and donuts. Parents approached the officers to seek advice on school safety issues for their children, while groups of young people engaged in friendly conversations with the officers, discussing the pros and cons of police work.

Ed Chen, a Temple City council member who previously served as a volunteer police officer, emphasized that such events help enhance public understanding of law enforcement agencies and the challenges they face. Through face-to-face interactions, residents can directly express their security concerns to the police, strengthening the trust and cooperation between law enforcement and the community, ultimately contributing to the mutual maintenance of community safety. The city government plans to continue organizing similar activities in the future.

Despite the numerous challenges faced by law enforcement and prosecutors in the greater Los Angeles area within the judicial system, with many cities experiencing security alerts, Temple City consistently ranks high in California’s city safety rankings. This accomplishment is attributed to the diligent work of the police force. The city government hopes that events like “Coffee with a Cop Day” will allow officers to feel the love and support from the community, further boosting morale.
