Farewell New York City Overseas Chinese Community Welcomes Deputy Director General Zhang Junyu

Deputy Director Zhang Junyu of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York is set to return to Taiwan with honor. On July 14th, a farewell banquet was held in Flushing, where members of the overseas community performed classic songs like “Friends” and “Blessings”, creating a lively and heartwarming atmosphere.

Zhang Junyu was appointed as the Deputy Director of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York in July 2018, serving in this position for about six years. He has previously worked in the Consular Affairs Bureau, European Division, North American Division, and other departments. During his tenure in New York, he actively served the traditional overseas Chinese community and Taiwanese associations in the greater New York area. He also made earnest efforts in United Nations affairs, dedicated to promoting Taiwan’s diplomatic efforts and enhancing Taiwan’s visibility in the eastern United States. When interviewed, Zhang stated that he will return to Taiwan in two weeks to work at the Department of Secretariat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“I feel very honored and grateful over these six years. New York has been a wonderful work experience for me,” Zhang expressed in his speech. He acknowledged the successful organization of events such as the transit of the president and vice president, promotion of UN initiatives, and National Day receptions during his time in New York, attributing these achievements to the numerous overseas compatriots in the area who supported him.

The jurisdiction of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York includes New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. Deputy Director Zhang Junyu mentioned that during the busiest diplomatic periods, he would spend weekends visiting eight different overseas Chinese communities or attending official events, often staying until the end of the activities.

“I was able to do all this because I have a supportive wife by my side. It is because of her that I find joy in what I do,” Zhang Junyu expressed his gratitude for his wife’s assistance in handling family matters.

“I remember a line from the award-winning movie by director Ang Lee, ‘Life of Pi’, which says ‘Life is a series of goodbyes’. Especially after spending 2,200 days over six years and making so many good friends, bidding farewell is truly not easy. In two weeks, I will leave with a heart full of gratitude and many beautiful memories. I would like to take this opportunity to offer my sincerest blessings to our community friends present here today,” Zhang Junyu concluded.
