Russia’s military launched a ballistic missile attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, in the early hours of Sunday, July 26, and bombed other regions of Ukraine on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of 4 civilians.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported on Sunday morning that Russian forces had launched ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv in the early hours and had fired a total of 7 ballistic missiles and 136 drones towards various regions of Ukraine overnight.
According to the Ukrainian media outlet The Kyiv Independent, multiple explosions occurred in Kyiv at 12:23 am local time on Sunday, causing large fires.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that after the missile attack on the city, a residential building of 18 floors in the central area caught fire on the 7th and 8th floors. A non-residential area and several cars also caught fire after the attack, with a total of three people injured in the assault.
In the northern city of Chernihiv, local authorities reported that a Russian drone hit a supermarket, resulting in the deaths of two people, including a 10-year-old child, and injuring 3 others.
Russian forces also carried out attacks during the day. In the eastern city of Kharkiv, a Russian drone attack led to the death of 1 person and 12 others requiring medical treatment.
At the same time, the southern city of Zaporizhzhia was bombed, resulting in 1 fatality and 6 injuries. The city has been subjected to intense bombing by Russian forces in recent months.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on the social media platform Telegram on Sunday, “This is deliberate terrorism by Russia, with no legitimate military rationale.”
Zelensky had warned last Friday that “we have information from our intelligence agencies and partners” that Russia was prepared to launch a large-scale missile attack on Kyiv within 48 hours.
On the other hand, Russian news agency TASS reported that the Ukrainian drone strikes also targeted Horlivka in Donetsk Oblast, a region occupied by Russia. According to local authorities supported by Russia, the attack resulted in the deaths of 4 civilians.
