China’s increase in doctoral recruitment leads to oversupply with over 100,000 people vying for 30,000 university vacancies.

China’s doctoral students are facing unprecedented employment pressure as a result of the rapid expansion of doctoral programs in recent years. The cohort of doctoral students who entered in 2020 due to increased enrollment are now gradually reaching the graduation stage. Data released by the Ministry of Education indicates that in 2024, China had around 97,200 doctoral graduates, which increased to 112,900 in 2025. The number of graduates in 2026 has not been disclosed yet but is expected to continue to rise.
