Fatal Car Accident in Guangde, Anhui Province Sparks Controversy

A serious car accident recently occurred in Guangde City, Anhui Province, and the official report was only released two days after the incident. Discrepancies between the official casualty figures and information provided by the family of the deceased as well as whistleblowers have sparked controversy. Netizens are demanding accurate reporting from the police and severe punishment for the responsible party.

Videos widely circulated on mainland Chinese social media show that on June 20, this traffic accident took place at the intersection of Cambridge Road in Guangde, Anhui. A sedan lost control and veered into the non-motorized lane, striking a mother and her two children waiting at a red light on an electric bike.

According to surveillance footage from the scene, at a crossroads, an SUV traveling in the right turn lane crossed over a green belt and collided with an electric bike waiting at a red light, trapping the electric bike beneath the vehicle.

Another surveillance video from the opposite direction shows the SUV speeding from a distance, entering the right turn lane, hitting the green belt, swerving, and finally running over the green belt before crashing into the electric bike. The electric bike and the three people on it were instantly pinned beneath the vehicle.

Videos captured by eyewitnesses at the scene show that following the accident, a large number of citizens worked together to lift the vehicle to rescue the trapped individuals. A nearby repair shop even brought a forklift to extract the victims from underneath the car.

Information provided by eyewitnesses and insiders revealed that one of the two young children died on the spot, while the other was transferred to Hangzhou Hospital and declared brain dead. The child was removed from life support in Guangde ICU and subsequently passed away. The children’s mother sustained multiple fractures all over her body and is still undergoing intensive care in the hospital, facing a difficult and lengthy recovery process.

An official post on the Weibo account of Dahe Newspaper expressed condolences for the two deceased children, as stated by a neighbor claiming to live next door. The neighbor mentioned that both children had passed away, while the adults were still receiving treatment in the hospital.

Another neighbor claiming to live downstairs stated that one of the children was in the third grade, and the other had not even started kindergarten. The neighbor mentioned encountering them frequently while dropping off and picking up the children and how neighbors later assisted in clearing the children’s belongings from their home.

Ms. Feng, a relative of the victims, mentioned that her 3-year-old nephew and her niece, who was nearly 10 years old, had passed away, with her sister-in-law suffering multiple fractures and still under medical care. Tragedy struck while her sister-in-law was taking the children for lessons.

Staff from the community where the mother and her children resided expressed deep sympathy for the casualties of the accident, noting that the specific details have not yet been officially released.

It was not until the evening of the 22nd that the Guangde police issued a report stating that at approximately 15:36 on the 20th, a mother riding an electric bike with her two children was hit by a private sedan while waiting at a red light in Guangde, Anhui. The accident resulted in 1 death and 2 injuries, with the driver, Yang, ruled out for suspicion of drunk or drugged driving and subsequently detained.

After the official report was released by the Guangde police, many netizens raised questions and disputes, pointing out discrepancies between the reported casualties of 1 death and 2 injuries and the fact that one child was declared brain dead. The general public is urging the police to provide accurate and transparent information.

A Weibo member verified as an editor at Beijing New Studio Media Co., Ltd. and a host for Chao Hu, posted a message asking what could lead a vehicle to lose control at an intersection, crossing over a green belt and hitting individuals waiting at a red light. The member highlighted the struggle of the mother still fighting in the ICU and the two children who will never return home, emphasizing the importance of uncovering the truth.

Another Weibo member expressed that numerous local residents laid flowers and paid respects at the site of the accident…

Additionally, it was revealed that a large number of people from Guangde voluntarily visited the local hospital to mourn the children who died in the accident. The scene was filled with flowers, snacks, and lit candles.

Eyewitnesses believe that the accident was caused by the driver’s “distracted driving,” involving actions such as using a mobile phone while driving, picking up dropped phones, or driving in flip-flops, all of which are violations.

The female driver, after exiting the vehicle, displayed a cold and indifferent attitude, urging the traffic police to expedite the handling of the situation, mentioning that she needed to go to Nanjing and boasting about her high insurance coverage, showing no sign of remorse in her words.

Many people expressed dissatisfaction with the driver’s indifferent behavior following the accident and called for strict punishment against her online.

Some netizens questioned whether there was censorship on certain platforms, with one individual expressing frustration that Douyin did not allow the sharing of on-site videos. There were also reports that a notification had been issued by a local institution instructing employees not to spread information related to the Guangde accident.
