Severe Rainstorm Hits Gansu, Over 190,000 People Affected

Severe rainstorms hit parts of Gansu Province, including Longdong, Longnan, and Longzhong from July 22 to 24, according to the Gansu Provincial Meteorological Bureau. The heavy rain has affected 192,500 people, resulting in one death and three missing persons.

A total of 1167 townships in the province experienced precipitation, with several areas accumulating over 100 millimeters of rainfall. The highest recorded cumulative rainfall was 367.7 millimeters in Chongxin County’s Xinyao Forest Farm. Areas like Pingliang, Dongxi, Qingyang, Tianshui, Longnan, and other regions have been severely impacted by the torrential rain, with reports of villages experiencing water and power outages, while road and transportation infrastructures have suffered significant damage.

The heavy rain has led to rivers swelling, as seen in online videos showing the White Dragon River in Huixian County, Longnan City, Gansu Province, overflowing with muddy water. A pedestrian can be seen rushing across a bridge as nearby residents anxiously shout, “Hurry, run for your life!” before the bridge collapses. An elderly person standing near the bridge quickly flees the scene.

Due to the situation, all roads connecting Huixian County to the outside world have been cut off, prompting local authorities to initiate a Level III emergency response to flood control and disaster relief efforts.

Witnessing the disaster unfold, netizens expressed deep concern, with many commenting on the increasing frequency of natural disasters. Some remarked on the abnormal weather patterns this year, with uneven distribution of rainfall leading to droughts and floods in different regions. Others noted the widespread nature of the recent torrential rain and expressed hopes for the safety and well-being of those affected.
