A resident accidentally threw away two precious heirloom platinum diamond rings while tidying up their home, mistaking them for trash, and the garbage had already been taken away by the sanitation department. Fortunately, with the full assistance of the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY), workers were able to retrieve this priceless family heirloom from among a staggering 20,000 pounds (about 9 metric tons) of putrid-smelling garbage.
It is reported that the misplaced items were platinum diamond wedding rings passed down from the owner’s grandmother, not only of considerable value but also carrying the emotions of several generations. When the owner realized they had thrown the rings into the trash along with other garbage, and the garbage truck had already left, they immediately called the New York City 311 hotline for help in a state of panic.
Upon receiving the report, the New York City Department of Sanitation quickly initiated an emergency response mechanism, pinpointing the garbage truck responsible for the area based on the trash collection route and timing, and intercepting it before the garbage was sent to a transfer station or incinerator.
The sanitation department then directed the truck carrying 20,000 pounds of garbage to a designated location and emptied all the waste on the ground. With the assistance of sanitation workers and specialized equipment, the owner and workers sifted through dozens of garbage bags.
After a strenuous search, when the owner finally found their family’s treasured ring amidst the colossal mountain of trash, everyone present was filled with joy and surprise. The owner expressed immense gratitude to the sanitation workers for their prompt response and assistance.
The Department of Sanitation stated that incidents where valuable items, passports, or jewelry are accidentally discarded as trash happen every few months. In fact, the city government has a protocol called the “Last Valuable Search” to deal with such situations.
The sanitation department specifically reminds residents that in the event of a similar accident, timing is crucial. It is essential to act quickly by promptly calling 311 before the garbage truck delivers the waste to a major transfer station, providing accurate details of the disposal location and timing, to give the sanitation department a chance to intercept the garbage collection vehicle in time, thus creating a miraculous recovery like this.
