The US Navy recently released a request for information for the prototype of the “Collaborative Combat Aircraft” (CCA), requiring the new aircraft to have a 10,000-pound external weapons payload, the ability to independently penetrate high-threat airspaces, and the capability to take off and land on Ford-class and Nimitz-class aircraft carriers. In terms of payload, range, stealth, and autonomous operation, what the US Navy is looking for goes beyond just a “loyal wingman” that follows manned aircraft operations, but rather aligns more closely with the abandoned X-47B stealth unmanned combat aircraft route from years ago.
The core combat capability of the Navy’s future carrier strike group is a sixth-generation aircraft codenamed F/A-XX, which is tasked with replacing the aging Super Hornets that have been frequently deployed in the Middle East recently. It will operate in a mixed formation with F-35C and also serve as a node in commanding the swarm of CCA unmanned wingmen. The development of this project has been quite convoluted.
