Recently, the world’s wealthiest person, Elon Musk, announced on the X platform that by the end of 2026, he will be using the AI platform xAI and its video production tool Grok Imagine to create a film adaptation of “The Odyssey” that stays true to the original work and authentically captures the artistic spirit of the Homerian epic.
Musk accompanied his announcement with a 3-minute concept clip generated by AI, showcasing a scene between the hero Odysseus and the sea goddess Calypso, allowing audiences to get a glimpse of the film’s atmosphere and essence in advance.
Adapted from the ancient Greek epic of the same name by Homer, “The Odyssey” primarily tells the story of the Greek hero Odysseus who, after the end of the Trojan War, undergoes ten years of wandering at sea, facing challenges from sea monsters, giants, sorceresses, and more before eventually returning to his homeland of Ithaca, reuniting with his wife and son, and reclaiming his throne.
The casting decisions made in Nolan’s version of “The Odyssey”, especially the use of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy and Elliot Page in a significant male role, have stirred widespread controversy. Musk has publicly criticized Nolan’s casting choices as historically inaccurate and driven by the desire for Oscars, claiming that they have “lost sight of principles”.
