Largest U.S. Newspaper Group Declares Not to Endorse Presidential Candidates

“Epoch Times, October 29, 2024” (Compiled by reporter Li Xin) – USA Today reports that its parent company, Gannett, the largest newspaper publisher in the United States, with over 200 American media outlets, will not endorse candidates for “presidential or national races.”

According to The Hill, Lark-Marie Antón, a spokesperson for USA Today, stated in an email to the paper on Monday, October 28, that, “All publications within the USA TODAY Network will not endorse candidates in presidential or national races.”

The USA Today Network is a media brand under the Gannett newspaper chain, comprising the national publication USA Today and local media organizations. Its website claims to be the largest provider of local and national news and digital media in the United States.

Based on the list provided on the USA Today Network’s website, local media such as The Arizona Republic, The Des Moines Register in Iowa, the Detroit Free Press in Michigan, and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in Wisconsin are all part of this network.

In another statement sent via email to The Hill last Wednesday, Antón mentioned, “While USA Today won’t endorse presidential candidates, local editors under the USA Today Network have the discretion to endorse in state or local elections. Many editors choose not to support individual candidates but rather focus on major local and state issues that impact communities.”

Antón explained that the reason behind this decision by the USA Today Network is their belief that the future of America is determined by local elections.

“We have over 200 publications nationwide, and our public service is to provide readers with vital facts and credible information required to make informed decisions,” the spokesperson stated.
