On the evening of August 7th, the 32nd annual Chinese Festival opened its doors at the Chinese American Community Center (CACC) in Hockessin, Delaware. This event, which is the largest Chinese cultural celebration in Delaware, attracted a diverse crowd of both Eastern and Western individuals, including many dignitaries and political figures.
The festival, which spanned the entire weekend, featured distinctive exhibitions, delicious food, traditional performances such as dragon and lion dances, ethnic dances, tai chi, martial arts, and more. It aimed to promote an understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture and traditions among the local community.
Several distinguished guests, including the Director of the Washington DC Chinese Cultural and Educational Center, Matt Meyer, the Governor of Delaware, along with state representatives and county council members, presented awards to the CACC, acknowledging its positive contributions to the community and congratulating the successful organization of the Chinese Festival.
Tommy Lu, Chairman of the CACC Board of Directors, shared that the festival, which began in 1994 with only two years of hiatus, seeks to promote Chinese culture within the community. He emphasized that performances, exhibitions, and food are the main highlights of the event.
This year’s festival saw an increase in talented participants, notably involving a variety of youth volunteers. Lu expressed his pleasure in witnessing the high turnout of young volunteers, creating an opportunity for them to work together, socialize, and enjoy, thus fostering a sense of unity among the Chinese community.
Councilwoman Janet Kilpatrick, who has been attending the CACC Chinese Festival for 16 consecutive years, mentioned that her participation over the years has deepened her understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture. She emphasized the importance of respecting and understanding different cultural backgrounds within the community.
State representative Mike Smith, who has attended the festival for a decade, praised the CACC Chinese Festival as one of the best community events. He appreciated the welcoming atmosphere, diverse cuisine, and rich cultural experiences the event offered, underscoring its value to the local community.
County councilmember Dave Tackett, attending the festival for the first time, commended the vibrant performances and the dedication of the participants. As a candidate for the Recorder of Deeds position, he outlined his plans to address property deed issues in the county, emphasizing the need for efficient processes to safeguard the interests of vulnerable residents.
Federal Senate candidate and former State Senator Mike Katz highlighted the significance of multicultural exchanges in enriching society, noting the invaluable contributions of the Chinese American community to Delaware. He praised the emphasis on education, family values, and cultural exchange within the Chinese community, expressing admiration for their commitment to sharing their traditions.
Kira Alejandro, a Democratic candidate for the Newcastle County Council 3rd District, emphasized the importance of community service. As a longtime attendee of the Chinese Festival, she expressed her delight in participating in the event, particularly enjoying the vibrant performances and delectable cuisine offered.
As the festival continues to bridge cultural gaps and foster community bonds, it serves as a platform for cultural exchange, mutual learning, and celebration of diversity in Delaware. The event not only showcases the richness of Chinese culture but also underscores the importance of unity and understanding across diverse cultural backgrounds.
