On August 3, 2026, a series of six earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.0 or above struck Gaohsien, Yibin, Sichuan, with the highest reaching 4.8 magnitude. From June 28 to August 3, 2026, within approximately five weeks, there have been at least 102 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or higher across eight provinces and regions in mainland China. Among them, there were 26 earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or above and 8 earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 or above, with 7 of them occurring in July.
According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, on August 3, 2026, at 2:21 am, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit Gaohsien, Yibin, Sichuan, with a depth of 6 kilometers and the epicenter located at 28.54 degrees north latitude and 104.67 degrees east longitude.
Multiple regions including Yibin, Luzhou, and Chengdu in close proximity to the epicenter experienced significant tremors. Following the initial earthquake, Gaohsien, Yibin, experienced subsequent earthquakes of magnitudes 3.0, 3.3, 3.3, 3.6, and 4.2 at 2:32 am, 3:29 am, 3:54 am, 11:11 am, and 1:00 pm respectively on August 3, 2026.
Later on the same day, at 4:25 pm on August 3, 2026, Eryuan County in Dali Prefecture, Yunnan, experienced a 3.2 magnitude earthquake. This recent seismic activity follows a 5.5 magnitude earthquake in Gaohsien, Yibin, Sichuan on June 29, 2026, and two 5.0 magnitude earthquakes on July 8, 2026, in Gaohsien, Yibin, Sichuan.
As per the official records of the China Earthquake Networks Center, by the end of July in 2026, mainland China has already experienced 17 earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 or higher, with the highest being a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in Zadoi County, Haixi Prefecture, Qinghai Province on June 16, 2026. Compared to 2025, the number of earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.0 or higher in the first seven months of 2026 has already surpassed the total occurrences of such earthquakes in 2025.
Understanding 2026’s seismic activity, from June 28 to August 3, a period of about five weeks, there have been at least 102 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or higher in mainland China. Among these, Sichuan experienced 31 earthquakes, Xinjiang 21, Qinghai 25, Yunnan 17, Tibet 2, Inner Mongolia 2, Jiangsu 1, and Guangxi 1.
