The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a recall of a rechargeable hand warmer due to incidents of fire, burns, and the unfortunate death of an 83-year-old resident in San Diego.
According to reports from City News, the CPSC stated that the recall is for OCOOPA Rechargeable Hand Warmers, as the lithium-ion batteries in the product may overheat and catch fire, posing a serious risk of injury or death.
CPSC mentioned that the Chinese manufacturer OCOOPA Direct has received 1,480 reports of product overheating, including an incident in February this year which resulted in the death of an 83-year-old resident in San Diego, as well as 15 fires and 350 burn incidents.
The product was sold from September 2018 to May 2026 through platforms such as Amazon, Walmart, and the OCOOPA official website, with approximately 1.5 million units sold.
Consumers are advised by CPSC to immediately stop using the recalled hand warmer and contact OCOOPA Direct for a full refund, where they can choose to receive a refund through the original payment method or opt for an OCOOPA gift card.
The recalled products include model numbers UT3053, UT3056, ZLS-118, ZLS-118S, ZLS-118D, H01, and H01 (PD).
When returning the product, consumers should clearly mark “RECALLED” on the hand warmer using a permanent marker and take a photo. The image must clearly display the word “RECALLED,” the product model, and the three-digit batch number, which should then be uploaded to the OCOOPA recall page at: https://www.ocoopa.com/pages/product-recalls
If consumers choose to dispose of the product themselves, it is crucial not to throw the lithium-ion battery in regular trash or recycling bins to avoid fire hazards. CPSC recommends contacting the local government’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) recycling center to confirm if they accept faulty lithium-ion batteries.
