Recently, there was an incident on the Anhui Hu-Yu Expressway in Xuancheng where four off-road vehicles were driving side by side. The four vehicles were occupying all lanes, completely blocking the vehicles behind them, and a related video of the incident went viral on the internet, sparking discussions. Some netizens questioned the behavior of the involved vehicles, suggesting that they were engaging in the act of “occupying lanes in a group.”
On July 26, a dashcam video circulated widely on the internet. The video was captured at 10:26 in the morning near the east exit of the Anhui Hu-Yu Expressway in Xuancheng. The footage showed four Jeep vehicles driving horizontally side by side, occupying multiple lanes of the highway at similar speeds, forming an impassable “iron wall.” At one point, two of the vehicles activated their brake lights, making it impossible for the trailing vehicles to overtake, forcing them to slow down and follow behind.
An article in “People’s Concern” reported that such behavior seriously affected the efficiency and safety of traffic on the expressway.
On July 27, Xuancheng traffic police in Anhui confirmed that the incident occurred on the 26th and said they would contact the vehicle owners for further actions.
The incident has stirred up discussions on social media. Many netizens expressed doubts about the local police’s response, suggesting that the authorities should make an official statement, identify the drivers involved, initiate an investigation, review the expressway surveillance footage, and disclose the investigation results.
Some netizens shared the license plate numbers of the four involved off-road vehicles as SU E66*, HU D91, HU A96, and HU GF2*.
Many netizens believe that on highways with heavy traffic flow, the prolonged side-by-side driving of four vehicles could easily lead to rear-end collisions or even chain-reaction accidents, posing significant safety risks. They suggest that severe penalties should be imposed to serve as a deterrent.
A Weibo user named “Selective Detective A Chu” expressed a chilling feeling upon watching the video, describing the four vehicles on the G50 expressway as a moving wall deliberately maintaining lower speeds side by side, effectively blocking the path of all trailing vehicles. This “barrier-style” driving exhibits a discomforting desire for control and malice, going beyond mere driving habits to challenge public road rights.
Another Weibo user, “Nirvana FUN,” pointed out that such actions may violate relevant provisions of the Road Traffic Safety Law. Deliberately obstructing traffic lanes could result in fines ranging from 20 to 200 RMB and 1 to 3 demerit points. If proven to be premeditated group behavior with severe consequences, it may also constitute illegal activities such as reckless driving, leading to legal consequences.
