Recently, there has been a surge in the number of incidents involving unlicensed mopeds carrying two riders in various neighborhoods across New York City, with more than 40 cases reported so far. Despite the arrest of a 17-year-old teenager suspected of being involved in at least 29 similar cases, concerns over public safety persist in Chinatown communities such as Flushing, Bayside, and Brooklyn where residents have reported sightings of suspicious mopeds slowly circling the area.
According to police reports, over the past 2 months, 15 similar incidents have occurred in both Manhattan and the Bronx. One such case took place on July 10th at 4 p.m. on Cherry Street, where a 64-year-old woman was walking her dog and had her necklace snatched by a stranger on a moped who then fled the scene.
Authorities have noted that these types of crimes are typically carried out by two individuals riding a moped together. The suspects often ride unregistered or use fake license plates on lightweight mopeds, cruising slowly through commercial streets, parks, and residential areas. They target pedestrians wearing gold necklaces, with the passenger on the backseat swiftly grabbing the necklace from behind before speeding away.
Police have revealed that many of these crimes involve juvenile offenders who are being manipulated by adult criminal organizations. These groups take advantage of the lesser legal responsibilities of minors, providing them with unlicensed mopeds and recruiting them to commit crimes. After a successful theft, they acquire the stolen goods at low prices and profit from resale on the black market.
In light of these incidents, authorities are advising the public, especially during the summer months when clothing tends to be lighter, to avoid displaying valuable jewelry like gold necklaces when out in public. Pedestrians are urged to be vigilant of mopeds approaching with two riders, wearing full-face helmets, and deliberately slowing down as they get closer. In the event of a robbery or if suspicious activity is observed, individuals are encouraged to immediately call 911.
