Shanghai Jiao Tong University Ph.D. Student Report Professor Academic Bullying Stirs Attention

【Epoch Times, May 8, 2025】Late at night on May 7th, Wei Jing, a doctoral student at Shanghai Jiaotong University, exposed the academic bullying by the head of the laboratory. On May 8th, the topic labeled “Doctoral student at Shanghai Jiaotong University reports professor for academic bullying” surged to the top of the trending list on Weibo.

Wei Jing posted on Weibo, revealing that she is a 2017 doctoral student at the School of Biomedical Engineering at Shanghai Jiaotong University, and the head of the laboratory is Professor Shao Zhifeng.

Shao Zhifeng currently serves as the team leader of the academic degree evaluation committee of the school. Almost every doctoral student in his laboratory has been delayed for 8 to 9 years, and some have not graduated for over ten years.

Wei Jing stated, “My own situation is that my supervisor forcibly took over my research topic proposal. After that, I did not pursue the topic towards graduation. He deceived and coerced me into doing private work for him. When I was about to finish my studies, I refused to sacrifice myself for his project. He retaliated by not allowing me to enter the laboratory for experiments for two years. In the end, he still did not want me to graduate based on my own designed topic, and demanded that I sign an agreement. The content included funding it myself, restricting how the topic should be conducted, and promising that if I fail to graduate, it is not his responsibility, etc. If I didn’t sign, he threatened to dismiss me verbally and even had security guards drag me out.”

On May 8th, staff from the School of Biomedical Engineering at Shanghai Jiaotong University told Dawa News that the school has paid close attention to the information and is currently handling it. Specific investigation details are not convenient to disclose at the moment, and further developments will be announced through official channels.

Journalists from Jumroadcast privately contacted Wei Jing regarding the matter but have not received a response yet.

A reporter from Sichuan Observer reached out to Shao Zhifeng, who stated that the situation is complex and cannot be explained in a few words. “These are purely her personal imagination. The school has conducted investigations and reports on relevant situations. I don’t want to say more. Let’s wait for the school’s response.”

Currently, the report post by Wei Jing is no longer visible, and Shanghai Jiaotong University has not responded.

However, this incident has sparked widespread attention on the internet.

Renowned media personality Song Zude posted, saying, “Excellent! Good report! Some professors and doctoral supervisors are becoming more unreasonable. Sometimes complaints are ineffective, but publicly reporting online has significant power!”
