Recently, a dramatic rescue incident took place on 8th Avenue in Brooklyn. A driver was suspected of suddenly losing consciousness while driving, causing the vehicle to slowly glide along the busy street. A bystander immediately rushed forward, attempting to control the vehicle before it came to a complete stop, and then rescued the driver from the car and performed CPR. The entire process was captured from various angles on cell phone videos and has sparked attention on social media.
City Council Member Zhuang Wenyi released a video on WeChat yesterday (7th), revealing the incident she saw on social media. She said that in the video, a Chinese man rescued a person from the car and provided immediate aid after the driver lost consciousness, disregarding his own safety.
Zhuang Wenyi mentioned that the identity of the man who saved the driver is currently unknown, but she expressed gratitude for his courageous actions and urged anyone who knows him to contact her office. She hopes to award the hero with a commendation at the New York City Council to recognize his act of assisting others in a critical moment.
According to the video circulating on social media, the incident occurred on the road in front of the Kang Yi Pharmacy at the intersection of 60th Street and 8th Avenue in Brooklyn. The video was first shared around dusk on September 6th (Sunday).
At the time, 8th Avenue was bustling with traffic. A man in a blue and white t-shirt, knee-length shorts, and sandals noticed a sedan moving slowly and rushed onto the road to try to open the car door. However, unable to open the door, the vehicle continued to move forward.
Subsequently, the man leaned into the car through the partially open driver’s side window, attempting to control the vehicle. Once the sedan came to a halt, he immediately opened the door, unbuckled the safety belt of the driver, and pulled a young Chinese man wearing a white short-sleeved shirt and red knee-length shorts out from the driver’s seat.
The video shows the rescuer kneeling on the road and performing chest compressions on the unconscious man, initiating emergency response. Despite the continuous flow of traffic on the road, many passing vehicles and cyclists slowed down to observe, with some honking their horns. Delivery motorbikes and bicycles could also be seen passing by.
Currently, at least three short videos from different perspectives are circulating on social media, capturing various segments from the sedan slowly gliding, the bystander rushing to control the vehicle, to pulling the driver out and providing aid.
The related videos have sparked discussions in the Chinese community on social media. Some netizens commented, “He didn’t just save one person, he saved many.” There were also remarks suggesting that the rescuer might be an off-duty Chinese police officer, expressing gratitude by saying, “Saving one life is better than building a seven-tiered pagoda.”
However, details such as the name, profession, relationship with the police, and the specific physical condition of the rescued driver are still pending further verification.
In the video, Zhuang Wenyi expressed gratitude to the rescuer and wished for the safety and health of all community residents.
