At 97 years old, Betty Bromage walked on the wing of an airplane; at 95, Bryan Murray went water skiing; at 94, Orrin Asmus continued driving trucks; at 101, Neville Sandiford played golf; and at 92, Hisako Sakai played video games. For these seniors, age seems to be just a number on their identity cards – they take to the skies, water, and work just like they did when they were younger.
August 21 is National Senior Citizens Day in the United States. UPI has recently highlighted five elderly individuals from the UK, New Zealand, the United States, and Japan. The youngest among them is 92 years old, while the eldest is already 101, and each of them is defying expectations with their activities.
Betty Bromage from the UK is 97 years old this year. On August 4, she completed her 6th “wing walking” challenge. Instead of being inside the cockpit, she was strapped to the wing of the plane as they ascended into the skies.
Bromage first tried wing walking at the age of 87. In 2022, at the age of 93, she set a Guinness World Record. This year, at 97 years and 123 days, she challenged herself once again, surpassing her previous record.
What’s even more surprising is that she suffered a stroke last August and received treatment at Cheltenham General Hospital in England. After recovering, she decided to take to the skies again, while also raising funds for the stroke ward that cared for her.
Bryan Murray from New Zealand, aged 95, enjoys water skiing as his favorite sport.
In April this year, at the age of 94 years and 318 days, he completed a water skiing challenge at Lake Kereta near Auckland, setting the Guinness World Record for the oldest male water skier globally.
Murray has been water skiing since 1955, accumulating over 70 years of experience. Even after achieving the world record, he has no plans to stop. As he ages, he intends to keep challenging himself and breaking his own records.
Orrin Asmus from the United States has a more routine job – driving trucks – but at the age of 94.
Asmus started driving trucks at the age of 19 and has been working at McLaughlin Freight for 11 years. He turned 94 on August 11 this year.
The company has applied to Guinness World Records, hoping to certify him as the world’s oldest truck driver.
Neville Sandiford from New Zealand only started playing competitive golf at the age of 79.
In August 2025, at the age of 101 years and 262 days, Sandiford participated in a golf croquet competition for players over 80 in Paraparaumu, New Zealand.
Guinness World Records later confirmed him as the world’s oldest male competitive croquet player.
From picking up a mallet at the age of 79 to still competing at 101, he has been playing for 22 years.
Hisako Sakai from Japan, aged 92, plays fighting video games. She joined a Tekken 8 esports competition, where 8 seniors competed, ranging from 73 to 95 years old.
Sakai made it to the finals and eventually defeated 74-year-old Goro Sugiyama to claim the championship.
The Care eSports Association, which organized the event, hopes to further expand senior esports competitions in the future and hold national tournaments.
