In the midst of the primary elections for the midterms in the United States, Republican state representative Chuck Edwards of North Carolina announced on Wednesday (August 5) that he will not seek re-election.
“After much prayer and careful consideration, I have decided to withdraw from the re-election campaign. I will continue to fulfill my current term,” Edwards said on X, on Wednesday. “Serving the western region of North Carolina has been the honor of my life. Thank you for your trust, prayers, and support.”
At 65 years old, Edwards faced increasing pressure due to allegations of sexual harassment from two female staffers. However, he has repeatedly denied any inappropriate behavior.
On Monday, the House Ethics Committee stated that, due to Edwards’ “continued unprofessional and inappropriate behavior towards two young female staffers,” the committee recommended that all House members condemn him.
However, the committee also stated that there was no evidence of Edwards engaging in sexual activities with any staff members or making sexual demands towards them. The committee concluded that these allegations “do not involve quid pro quo sexual harassment” and did not violate the “literal provisions of federal harassment laws.”
The committee added that his pattern of behavior could be misconstrued by a reasonable person, including giving young women luxurious and frequent gifts, commenting on their appearance and attire, inviting them to intimate dinners and vacations, among other things.
However, Edwards maintains that his gift-giving and concern had no romantic or sexual intentions.
Edwards did not have a long tenure in Congress. He was a representative in the state legislature and defeated Congresswoman Madison Coxon in the 2022 Republican primaries. Prior to the ethics investigation, he had maintained a low profile at the Capitol.
