Explosion at a Factory in Wanyuan, Shanxi with Thick Mushroom Clouds of Smoke Rising into the Sky

On the afternoon of January 9th, an explosion occurred at a factory in Huangfu Township, Wanrong County, Shanxi Province (Jinsheng New Energy). According to official reports, the explosion has resulted in at least one death and two injuries.

Video footage shared by netizens showed that after the explosion at Jinsheng New Energy, a mushroom cloud of thick smoke rose at the scene, soaring into the sky and visible from afar.

Some netizens commented, “There is a large chemical factory less than a kilometer away from our village, and the smell emitted from it every day is suffocating.” “I was in a nearby village at that time, and I got a big scare.” “I even said to myself in the afternoon, why is there a mushroom cloud?” One netizen even disclosed, “Five people died in the chemical industrial park in Wanrong last year.”

According to the emergency management bureau of Wanrong County, around 5:30 pm on the 9th, a fuel explosion accident occurred at Shanxi Jinsheng New Energy Co., Ltd. in Huangfu Township, Wanrong County. Three people were trapped, all of whom have been rescued. Among them, one person died, and two were injured, with the injured already hospitalized. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.

One netizen questioned, “Such a serious explosion and only three people? This feels like that person in ‘Ferryman’ [a popular movie] who was trapped in the mine accident and kept in the refrigerator by his wife for ten years, just to turn it into an ordinary accident. Ah, I don’t know what kind of taste it is.”

Some netizens believe, “How should I put it, the severity of an accident may differ between one death and five deaths, and between being directly killed by the explosion and being injured and sent to the hospital without survival, it’s a different concept.” However, there are also netizens who commented, “There aren’t many people in the industrial park to begin with, apart from those working in their own factories, there’s not much around.”
