On Saturday morning (August 8th), a Delta Air Lines plane bound for Orlando had to make an emergency return to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport shortly after takeoff due to reports of an unusual smell and smoke in the cockpit. The Delta flight 2204, operated by a Boeing 757, had 199 passengers and 6 crew members on board when it departed Atlanta at 7:23 a.m. local time. The crew declared an emergency and decided to turn back when the cockpit reported smoke.
About 200 passengers and crew members evacuated safely via emergency slides upon landing back at the Atlanta airport. Delta Air Lines expressed in a statement that safety is their top priority, apologizing for the inconvenience caused to the passengers during this incident.
Following the reported smell in the cockpit, the crew followed procedures to return to Atlanta International Airport, where the plane deployed slides for evacuation. Delta Air Lines mentioned that they are conducting a comprehensive assessment of the Boeing 757 aircraft to determine the source of the smell but have not yet identified the exact cause of the odor in the cockpit. Additionally, one crew member and one passenger sought medical assistance.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that Delta Flight 2204 landed safely around 8 a.m. and has launched an investigation into the incident.
One passenger on the flight, Jordan Conlin, shared his recollection of the chaotic moments in the air with his family. Conlin described how everything seemed normal in the first few minutes after takeoff but quickly changed when the captain announced the smell in the cockpit, leading to the decision to return. As the plane approached Atlanta International Airport, the crew instructed all passengers to assume the brace position.
Conlin recounted the tense atmosphere, with the captain repeatedly exclaiming “brace, brace, brace” during landing. He expressed relief upon safely disembarking, mentioning the mix of screams and panic on board, emphasizing how unexpected and frightening the situation was on what should have been a routine flight.
Conlin and his family were then escorted back to the terminal and boarded a replacement flight to Orlando.
Meanwhile, a video circulating on the TikTok platform captured the evacuation scene with at least three inflatable emergency slides deployed on the tarmac, showing dozens of passengers carrying their belongings and queuing up for evacuation. The video caption reflected the traumatic experience of undergoing an airplane evacuation.
