Recently, an unusually powerful “Nor’easter” storm has been relentlessly hitting the Northeastern United States, bringing gale-force winds, heavy rain, and waves reaching up to 6 meters in the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions. This has led to severe flooding in some low-lying coastal areas, resulting in one fatality and four injuries.
According to media reports, a 56-year-old male employee of the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) was tragically killed on Saturday, September 26th, when a tree collapsed on him in a parking lot in East New York, Brooklyn. Four others were injured, including children, due to fallen trees.
Data from a U.S. power tracking website shows that over 150,000 homes and businesses experienced power outages at the peak of the severe weather. New Jersey was the hardest hit with over 68,000 outages, followed by around 40,000 outages in New York state. Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania also suffered significant impacts.
The storm has also caused widespread transportation disruptions in the region. Hundreds of flights at major East Coast air hubs like Boston’s Logan International Airport were either canceled or delayed. Additionally, several roads were submerged under floodwaters, some ferry services in New York state were temporarily halted, and speed restrictions were imposed on multiple bridges.
The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts that the impact of this storm will linger until Monday, September 28th. The meteorological department specifically warns that due to the combined effects of a full moon, tides may be further elevated, advising the public to stay away from water bodies and refrain from venturing onto beaches. Furthermore, there is a forecast of more harsh weather in the coming days as a strong cold front is expected to sweep through the region.
