Lea Salonga Returns Home to Perform After 8-Year Absence, Remembers Deceased Father and Reveals Regret

After 3 and a half years, Fish Leong’s “When We Talk About Love” world tour concert, the first chapter, recently arrived in Kuala Lumpur on the 20th, marking her return to her hometown Malaysia after an 8-year absence. She expressed that her feelings were both excited and complicated.

“These past few days, everyone I’ve met feels like childhood friends growing up together; and now, standing on the stage, those who grew up with me have become all of you who have accompanied me for over 20 years. It’s not easy.”

She specially prepared three hometown-exclusive songs for her Malaysian fans, including Leslie Cheung’s “Chase”, Jay Chou’s “Amnesic” written for her, and a song named “Carved in My Heart” written by a Malaysian musician.

Having performed in hundreds of solo concerts, Fish Leong’s eternal regret is that her father never had the chance to witness her performances. When she released her album, she was actually fulfilling her father’s dream of becoming a singer: “My father met my mother through a singing competition. He loved buying records, fantasizing about being a singer one day, and wanted to cultivate his daughter into a singer.”

So, returning to Malaysia after 8 years, she has always had her father in mind. She felt a mix of emotions and indescribable feelings during rehearsals; when she officially performed the song “Faint Light”: “I was almost in tears. Even though my father has never seen my concerts, every time I feel like he’s there, sitting in a corner, watching my concert.”

Fish Leong said that she started singing at the age of 3 or 4 and still feels happy recalling singing on the rooftop of her house. “When We Talk About Love” concert tour started in 2020, celebrating her 20th year in the industry. From the opening songs “Faint Light” and “Parallel Space-Time” to the finishing song “Slowly Cold”, Fish Leong emotionally thanked the audience: “Thank you for watching me grow up over these 20 years, witnessing all my struggles.”

Over the past twenty plus years, Fish Leong has faced challenges on both the path of love and the path of singing, like the resilient butterfly and has given herself and thousands of fans “Courage”. At the end of the concert, she said: “It’s difficult to say everything I want to tell my fans in one go. I will close my eyes, alone in my corner, remembering the applause and encouragement on stage, which is beautiful. I cherish it; thank you all.” She also hinted at the upcoming second chapter of this tour, which will set sail next month.

During Fish Leong’s recent concert, her entourage included her mother, brother, and over 20 people, showing great support. Many friends also bought tickets to come and support, such as the composers of “Worship” and “Love Reveals True Feelings”, Eric Peng and her good friend Yee Chee Chi, cousin Nicholas Chung, and also Ah Fei, who started with her from folk cafes and competitions. They not only enjoyed the performance from the audience seats, but also cheered her on backstage, making the entire backstage filled with a hometown atmosphere.
