On June 21st and 22nd, the Canadian film and television company “New Century Films” premiered its masterpiece “Dream of a New Actor” in Liverpool’s Everyman Cinema and Manchester Conference Centre in the UK. The producer and cast team were present, interacting with the audience live, leaving many deeply moved.
“Dream of a New Actor” is a remake and filming based on “Dream of an Actor,” telling the story of the female lead Lin Meiyue experiencing dark secrets in the entertainment industry in mainland China and undergoing physical and mental trauma. Serendipitously, she came across a miraculous book, leading to a change in destiny, regaining hope and a fresh start.
The film, simple yet sincere and soul-stirring, narrates how in today’s chaotic world, one can uphold kindness and humanity amidst setbacks. This universal value transcends the barriers of Eastern and Western languages, deeply touching even British dignitaries who watched.
The premiere received strong support from the local government in Liverpool, with the Mayor, Members of Parliament, and council members in attendance. Mayor Barbara Murray of Liverpool said, “This film is refreshing and unique, with noble intentions presented in a relatable and profound manner, full of unexpected turns.”
“From the very beginning, hinting at miracles to their actual occurrence in the end, the process was fascinating and uplifting,” she said. “If one has a deep belief in good things, then goodness will naturally come forth.”
She also highly praised the film’s lead character, saying, “I feel she genuinely approaches her art, striving to be an outstanding actress for the love of the craft, not just for money, which is fantastic.”
Kim Johnson, a Member of Parliament for the Riverside area in Liverpool, found the film’s message to be significant. “This is a very good film, conveying a message of compassion and hope that is relevant to our times. I hope today’s audience will encourage others to see it as well.”
“Such films concerning art and culture, resonating and conveying positive messages, have a profound impact on our community, more powerful than documentaries or news broadcasts.”
Former Mayor of the London Borough of Southwark, currently a councilor, Sunil Chopra, was deeply moved. He commented, “This film is remarkable, very emotional, and touching.”
He particularly emphasized the core values of the film, “Truth, Compassion, Tolerance,” and their essential relevance in today’s society. “In the current times with numerous issues in families, marriages, and relationships, the message conveyed by this film is that we need empathy, support, and kindness – people must support each other spiritually and in life.”
“We must make sure more people see this film through media, social networks, and various channels. I hope more and more people watch this film and tell others: this film relates to everyone’s life.”
Timothy Cho, a member of the British Parliament’s bipartisan group on North Korea issues, who had been arrested multiple times in North Korea and witnessed atrocities, expressed after viewing the film, “This story is touching and promotes humanity, hope, and kindness.”
Timothy Cho remarked, “I particularly appreciate the part of the story about forgiveness (of evildoers); that’s a crucial aspect.”
“The story aims to promote love, hope, humanity, and compassion, which is what the world needs, especially in this era. So, I am grateful to be here today.”
Lead actress Feng Xiaoya portrayed the same character for the second time, seeking higher breakthroughs to showcase different layers. “I think it’s a bigger challenge for me,” she said.
She also mentioned that the entire production team upheld the principles of “Truth, Compassion, Tolerance” during the filming process, similar to the values depicted in the movie. “Each of us isn’t seeking personal fame or profit; we collaborate and encourage each other. Our goal is to spread the beauty of ‘Truth, Compassion, Tolerance’ through such a film.”
Male lead Xu Shengkun stated that the production team felt like a big family, giving their all for the project or film. “Although we are from different ethnicities and cultural backgrounds, I believe goodness comes from the heart, a fundamental aspect of human nature. I hope they all see this film and help spread such kindness,” he said.
Producer Huìyuè played a negative role in the film. She candidly expressed the challenge of showcasing the complexity of a character without exaggeration, “You have to portray her authentically without sensationalizing her, such individuals in reality… would do anything for their own agendas. She is, in fact, a pitiful character within society.”
Another supporting actress, Zhao Zhenru, mentioned that many works of “New Century Films” can be watched on the “Clean World” video platform. Additionally, the team’s new work, “Transcendence,” is nearing completion and will meet the audience in the coming months, hoping viewers will enjoy the film.
