President Biden expressed in a recent interview that he believes his mind is still sharp and he is capable of running for re-election in the United States. During a special interview with Lester Holt from NBC on Monday, President Biden firmly denied any change in his decision to run for re-election despite being asked whether recent days had altered his thoughts on the matter.
He stated that he decided to run for another four years because he feels his mission is not yet accomplished and that 14 million people (Democratic primary voters) have voted for him, hoping he becomes the Democratic nominee.
President Biden mentioned that his cognitive abilities remain “very good” and although he acknowledged his advanced age, he pointed out that he is only three years older than Trump. He emphasized that he has accomplished more in his 3.5 years in office than most presidents and hopes to be judged based on his record.
President Biden criticized the media for focusing solely on his mistakes while failing to hold Trump to the same level of scrutiny. He noted that fact-checking shows Trump made numerous inaccurate statements during presidential debates and questioned why the media does not address this issue.
When asked if he would consider holding an additional presidential debate in the coming weeks to “get back on the horse,” President Biden responded that he had already resumed his campaign activities with 22 large events and interactions with thousands of people, indicating that he has already gotten back on track.
Regarding the possibility of another disappointing debate performance in September, President Biden stated, “I don’t intend to have such a performance again.”
During the interview, President Biden and the host also discussed the recent shooting incident involving Trump. President Biden not only condemned political violence but also expressed confidence in the Secret Service. When questioned about whether the failed assassination attempt on Trump indicated a major security lapse by the Secret Service, President Biden emphasized that he has ordered an independent FBI analysis of the incident.
President Biden highlighted that beyond the Secret Service, local law enforcement agencies play a crucial role in protecting political figures. He emphasized that it is a complex process and acknowledged the significant contribution of local law enforcement in such situations.
