New York City’s Only “Shearing Sheep Festival” Held at Queens Farm on May 11

The Queens County Farm Museum in New York City has announced that they will be hosting the 13th Annual Sheep Shearing Festival on May 11. This festival is the only one of its kind in New York City and will feature sheep shearing demonstrations, farm tours, farmhouse visits, live music, and more.

Established in 1697, the Queens County Farm has since evolved into a museum that offers agricultural tours and educational activities. At this year’s Sheep Shearing Festival, professional sheep shearer Donald Kading will demonstrate the art of shearing wool from the flock. Visitors will have the opportunity to interact with craftsmen and participate in hands-on activities such as dyeing, spinning, weaving, and knitting. The event will also feature live music, hayrides ($6), children’s crafts, and a free treasure hunt game.

Visitors can also take a walking tour of the farm’s planting fields and historical buildings, experience spring plant sales, purchase yarn produced by the farm, witness colonial cooking demonstrations, visit the Con Edison Ecology booth, participate in the “Adopt-a-Worm” composting program, admire antique tractor displays, and enjoy a variety of local food offerings.

The Sheep Shearing Festival is just one of the important events in the Queens County Farm’s 2024 calendar. Other upcoming events include the Milk and Honey Month in June, the 45th Annual Thunderbird American Indian Powwow in July, and the Queens County Fair in October.

The farm also offers public education programs such as Grow & Gather, Wild Edibles, Art on the Farm, and Cheesemaking 101, providing opportunities to get outdoors, enjoy springtime, and learn new skills.

The Queens County Farm Museum showcases 300 years of New York City agriculture history and is a landmark in the city, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Sheep Shearing Festival will take place on Saturday, May 11, 2024, from 11am to 4pm. Tickets are priced at $12 to $15, with children under 3 admitted free.
