A mother from Sichuan, Yingzi, who lost her 27-year-old daughter in a tragic incident last year, is seeking justice for her daughter who was killed by a fellow resident in their community. The perpetrator was later diagnosed with schizophrenia. Yingzi expressed her anguish, saying, “I am in a state where I can neither live nor die. Death cannot bring justice for my daughter, and living is too painful. I only hope the murderer, Liang, will be sentenced to death. Mental illness should not be an excuse for her to have taken my daughter’s life.”
Following the incident, the Intermediate People’s Court of Chengdu announced a delay in the trial of the defendant Liang, charged with intentional homicide, on May 27, as reported by Jinyun News on June 6.
Yingzi’s husband passed away in 2009, and she had been living with her daughter Ziya since then. After Ziya graduated from university and returned to Chengdu to work in the media industry to support her mother with the mortgage for their new home in the Zhonghang community of Pixian District.
On June 9, 2024, Ziya was brutally murdered by Liang, a fellow resident in their community. The shocking incident left Yingzi devastated, and her once joyful demeanor turned into one of grief and loss. The pain of losing her daughter has taken a toll on her, visibly aging her appearance.
Recalling the tragic day, Yingzi shared that she had noticed Liang standing outside their home for several minutes before the gruesome incident. Despite trying to engage in conversation with her, Liang did not respond, which Yingzi initially attributed to the younger generation wearing headphones. Little did she know that this encounter would lead to the unimaginable tragedy that befell her daughter.
The heartbreaking last conversation between mother and daughter, where Ziya informed her mother of the suspicious behavior of Liang outside their door, haunts Yingzi to this day. She desperately tried to warn her daughter not to open the door and contacted the property management for assistance. Sadly, all her efforts were in vain, and she received the devastating news of her daughter’s murder.
The emotional turmoil and agony Yingzi endured mounted as she struggled to comprehend the motives behind the senseless act of violence that claimed her daughter’s life. Her quest for justice and closure led her to seek legal aid and fight for her daughter’s rights in court.
Yingzi’s persistent pursuit of justice was further fueled by the revelation of new details about the incident during a visit to the prosecutor’s office with her lawyer. Learning that Ziya had warned Liang to leave before the fatal attack but to no avail, left Yingzi questioning the adequacy of the security measures in their community.
The lack of accountability from the perpetrator’s family and the absence of an apology even after months have passed since the tragedy only added to Yingzi’s anguish. As she navigated the complexities of the legal process while juggling her meager income and the burden of the remaining mortgage on their home, Yingzi found solace in the support of her friends and her determination to seek justice for her beloved daughter.
The tragic loss of Ziya not only shattered Yingzi’s world but also shed light on the negligence of the property management, prompting her to challenge their role in the events leading up to her daughter’s death. The slow progress of the case and the lack of remorse from the perpetrator’s family continued to fuel Yingzi’s anger and despair.
Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, Yingzi remains resolute in her pursuit of justice for her daughter. The unanswered questions and the pain of her loss have fueled her determination to seek accountability and closure in the face of unimaginable tragedy.
