A tragic school shooting incident occurred on Friday morning in Nonthaburi Province, Thailand. A 14-year-old male student allegedly first shot and killed his grandparents at home, then proceeded to his school where he opened fire, resulting in the deaths of 3 teachers and 3 students. The perpetrator then took his own life, leading to a total of 9 fatalities and at least 15 injuries, shocking Thai society. The Ministry of Public Health later reported that the number of injured had risen to 22, with 9 in critical condition.
According to police reports and multiple media outlets, the shooting took place around 10 a.m. local time at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi Province, near Bangkok. The gunman, identified as a 14-year-old student at the school, allegedly first killed his grandparents in the outskirts of Bangkok before using a 9mm handgun registered under his grandfather’s name to commit the school shooting.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the student targeted teachers and fellow students before taking his own life. Thai PBS confirmed that 9 people lost their lives in the shooting, while at least 15 others were injured, with two in critical condition.
Witnesses described the chaos as the gunman entered the school building and began shooting at teachers and students. Many teachers and students scrambled to hide in classrooms or flee the scene. Police and rescue teams quickly arrived, cordoning off the campus for search and rescue operations and treating the wounded.
A seventh-grade student who escaped from the school building recalled seeing the gunman moving between classrooms before shooting a teacher standing at her classroom door.
Emergency responder Kiattikun Verapongpradit, 47, described arriving at the scene while the shooting was still ongoing. His team provided medical assistance to students with injuries to their backs, chests, and arms. They found a male teacher on the ground upstairs in the school building and a female teacher with gunshot wounds to her chest and arms in another classroom. Some teachers remained in classrooms awaiting rescue.
Following the incident, the school evacuated all staff and students. At least two nearby schools, including a kindergarten, announced closures to cooperate with the police investigation.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed shock and sorrow over the tragedy, offering condolences to the victims and their families. He pledged that the government would conduct a thorough investigation into the incident’s causes and review firearm regulations and campus security measures.
Opposition People’s Party leader Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut also took to social media to express condolences to the families of the victims and called on the government to reevaluate gun control regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Deputy Minister of Education Akaranan Kannankittinan issued a statement coordinating assistance efforts.
Local authorities reported that Debsirin Nonthaburi School had approximately 3,100 students and 147 teachers during the 2025 academic year.
This marks the second school shooting incident in Thailand this year. In February, a shooting and hostage situation at a school in southern Thailand resulted in the death of a school principal and a female student at the hands of an 18-year-old gunman.
In October 2022, a shocking mass shooting and stabbing incident at a kindergarten in Nong Bua Lamphu Province in northeastern Thailand claimed the lives of 37 people, mostly preschool children, prompting the government to continue tightening firearm regulations in recent years.
