Hong Kong singer G.E.M., who possesses a wide vocal range and powerful singing abilities, has recently completed a series of 5 concerts at the Kai Tak Sports Stadium. Behind the spectacular performances, she revealed on social media that she has been performing while battling illness. Since June, she has been suffering from a persistent cough due to sensitive airways, which later escalated into asthma. Her resilience in overcoming obstacles has left many fans feeling deeply concerned.
On August 23, G.E.M. posted on threads expressing her thoughts, mentioning that she had hoped her cough would improve before her performances in Hong Kong. However, it persisted throughout the 5 shows, with her even experiencing increased asthma in the following days. She admitted that each time she took the stage, she required extra physical strength and willpower but firmly believes that “joy is a choice.” She emphasized that only by approaching things with love can one find joy despite any circumstances.
Since the onset of symptoms of airway sensitivity in June, G.E.M. has been performing despite her cough at multiple concerts, with a sudden asthma attack before her show on the 20th. Despite feeling like her throat was blocked at the time, she resolutely stated, “So what if I have asthma, the show must go on!”
Reflecting on the various unexpected situations encountered during the tour, G.E.M. teared up and emotionally shared that throughout her journey, “I dare not say I am no longer afraid, but when facing it, I will say ‘you should leave.'” She also encouraged fans to bravely tell negative emotions “you should leave” when faced with fear and sadness.
Born in Shanghai in 1991 and moving to Hong Kong with her parents at the age of 4, G.E.M. had completed 100 solo concerts before turning 25. With her extraordinary vocal range, she once shattered a glass with her powerful voice on a mainland Chinese variety show, earning her fame in the Chinese music industry with her “iron lung vocals.” Her songs such as “Light Years Away” and “Goodbye” have become widely popular, with views on YouTube surpassing a billion.
