British farmers introduce body spray, sheep no longer fight

A sheep owner in England’s region of England was surprised to discover that spraying body spray on male sheep could suppress their aggressiveness and prevent them from fighting.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Sam Bryce, a 55-year-old retired female police officer, who owns about 30 sheep, was told by other farmers that spraying body spray on the rams could prevent them from fighting.

This type of body spray is a common deodorant, with the brand Lynx in the UK and Axe in the US. For years, young men have used its scent to attract women.

When people spray this body spray on male sheep, its strong scent masks the hormone that makes them aggressive and fight with their peers.

Bryce said that she often sprays this body spray on two 4-year-old rams. They have been living together since they were 5 months old and used to fight regularly. But after she started using this spray, they stopped fighting.

There are more and more sheep owners adopting this method. Bryce told ITV News, “We have a few people doing it around the country, and I would even say around the world now.”

Caitlin Jenkins, a 31-year-old farmer in Suffolk who raises sheep, said that besides calming the rams down, this body spray can also help ewes adopt orphaned lambs.

She explained that ewes identify their offspring by their scent. If body spray is sprayed on both the ewe and the orphan lamb, the ewe may become confused and treat the orphan lamb as her own offspring.

Jenkins said, “I always use Lynx Africa because it has a very distinct strong scent. Body sprays that are not strong enough are less likely to be effective.”

Unilever first introduced Axe in France in 1983. In countries where Axe is registered, the company markets it under the Lynx brand, including in the UK, Ireland, and Australia.

Twelve years later, the company launched the stronger-smelling Lynx Africa (and Axe Africa) products. The company said Lynx Africa is the best-selling men’s fragrance in the UK.
