The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is planning to upgrade the OMNY contactless payment system. In the future, passengers entering and exiting the subway and buses will be able to instantly view their OMNY card balance, check if they are eligible for free transfers, and see how many rides are left before reaching the weekly fare cap on the gate machine screens. This move aims to address long-standing complaints from passengers about insufficient information provided during their commutes.
Currently, when using OMNY to ride the subway or bus, the gate machines only display a “GO” indicator without showing the card balance like the MetroCard. It also does not inform passengers about their free transfer status or proximity to qualifying for free rides, leading many passengers to log into the OMNY website for inquiries, causing inconvenience.
MTA Chairman and CEO Janno Lieber announced on July 29 that they are exploring the addition of a “real-time information display” feature on the gate machines. This feature would include showing the remaining balance on the OMNY card, whether a free transfer has been utilized, and if the passenger has reached or is near the 12-ride fare cap threshold within 7 days.
Under the current OMNY fare cap system, once a passenger completes 12 paid rides within 7 days using the same card or device, the rest of their qualifying subway and bus trips for that week will be free of charge.
This improvement stems from a recommendation by the Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee to the MTA (PCAC). Last year, the PCAC conducted a survey with nearly 400 OMNY users, where about 75% of respondents reported encountering usage issues. Many of them expressed the desire for gate machines to display balance, free transfer status, and fare cap progress instead of having to check online afterwards.
MTA has phased out the MetroCard and replaced traditional magnetic strip tickets with the OMNY card. MetroCard sales and top-ups ceased at the end of 2025, and now it can only be used with remaining balances, eventually phasing out completely. MTA mentioned that over 90% of subway and bus rides are now paid for through OMNY, and the system will continue to be optimized to enhance the passenger experience.
