8 injured after bus collides with car and falls off bridge in Guangxi

On May 11th, a traffic accident occurred in Wuzhou City, Guangxi, involving a collision between a public bus and a small car, resulting in the public bus tumbling off a bridge. According to official reports, all 6 people on the bus were injured and sent to the hospital, while the 2 individuals in the small car sustained minor injuries and sought medical attention on their own. The condition of the 6 injured individuals on the bus was not disclosed by officials.

Several videos circulating online show a red public bus overturned at the bottom of the bridge, with the bridge railing broken and the bus severely damaged. Some occupants were trapped inside the bus, while others were rescued and carried away. A crowd of onlookers gathered at the scene.

An eyewitness described the location of the incident near the Yunlong Bridge, where the public bus fell from the bridge around 3 p.m. on the 11th.

A citizen who arrived at the scene post-accident told the “Xiaoxiang Morning News” that the public bus appeared to have fallen from the Yunlong Bridge after a rear-end collision with another vehicle and landed on a grassy area along the riverbank. The citizen mentioned that the bridge is several meters high, and the bus suffered severe damage upon falling.

According to the “China News Weekly,” Liang Yongbin, the head of the Yinhunan Road Special Operations Station of the Wuzhou Fire Rescue Detachment participating in the rescue efforts at the scene, mentioned that five injured individuals were still awaiting rescue upon their arrival. “Three of them were not pinned by the bus body, and we rescued them first. A few of the injured were mostly unconscious but still showed signs of breathing.”

Liang Yongbin explained that the biggest challenge of the on-site rescue was freeing the trapped bus driver. The driver, a man in his forties or fifties with a slightly larger build, initially remained conscious after the accident, with blood on his face but no apparent external injuries. “The steering wheel was wedged against his thighs and pressed against his chest and abdomen. He said he had little sensation in his legs and felt uncomfortable in the chest area.” The rescue operation for the driver lasted about an hour and a half, during which he lost consciousness multiple times. Unable to directly dismantle with rescue tools, they tried loosening the driver’s seat before finally dragging him out for hospital transfer.

At 4 p.m. on the 11th, a journalist from “Jimum News” called the Wuzhou Fire Rescue Detachment, and staff stated that the rescue operation was ongoing, and the casualty situation was unclear. Staff from the Wuzhou Emergency Management Bureau mentioned that rescue efforts were in progress, and casualty information was being assessed. Personnel from the Wuzhou Public Transport Group stated that the scene was still under rescue operations, and casualty information was not yet clear.

The Wanzhou District Government of Wuzhou City reported that around 2:50 p.m. on May 11th, a traffic accident involving a collision between a public bus and a small car occurred on Xijiang San Road in the Wanzhou District of Wuzhou City, resulting in the public bus overturning. All 6 people on the bus have been rescued and sent for medical treatment, while the 2 individuals in the small car sustained minor injuries and sought medical treatment promptly. Currently, the rescue operations, disposal, and investigation of the cause of the accident are underway.

It is worth noting that while the official report provided details about the injuries of the 2 individuals in the small car, there was no information released concerning the condition of the 6 individuals on the bus, only stating that they had been “rescued.”

According to public records, the Yunlong Bridge is located in Wuzhou City, spanning the Xijiang River, and serves as a vital transportation hub connecting the east and west banks of the city.
