According to CCTV News, on the 10th of May at noon, a school bus and a dump truck collided at an intersection in Chongchuan District, Nantong, Jiangsu. The bus was transporting students for a school-organized activity.

Video footage and photos circulated online show the school bus proceeding straight before being hit by a dump truck suddenly appearing on the right side. The bus ended up stopping under a bridge on the pedestrian walkway, sustaining severe damage with shattered windows and a burst front tire.

Local residents who seemed to have inside information revealed, “At least 6 children are gone, and some are still being rescued! Poor children! They are all treasures at home, it must be heartbreaking!” “Traffic control is in place, not allowing entry to the area (of the incident)! I had to take a detour to the hospital to visit a friend, and from what I heard in our community group chat, six people have died.” “In the group chat, it was mentioned that there were over forty children, but only around a dozen could stand up…”

The Nantong Traffic Police reported that the incident occurred around 12:55 p.m. on May 10th at the intersection of Panxiang Road and Hongjiang Road in Chongchuan District. The accident resulted in 8 injuries, including 1 in critical condition and 1 seriously injured. The driver at fault has been apprehended.

The report did not disclose any other relevant information, including the identities of the injured parties and the cause of the accident.

Staff at the Nantong First People’s Hospital told “Upstream News” that the injured children are currently receiving treatment. According to incomplete statistics, around twenty to thirty children have been injured to varying degrees and are still undergoing examinations.

Local residents revealed that the traffic lights at the intersection where the accident occurred were malfunctioning. “Both sets of straight-going traffic lights were not working, only the left turn red light was on, indicating a malfunction of the traffic lights.” “There are reports that the traffic lights broke yesterday, and no one came to fix them.”

Some witnesses mentioned that the children onboard the bus were elementary school students. “They are all 10 years old, 2nd graders, going to Chongchuan School for a dance performance.” “It seems they were in the 3rd grade.”

Others condemned, “Schools should focus on teaching properly, there are too many distractions. How many families are devastated by this incident?” “(Dump trucks) of this size should not be allowed in urban areas, driving like they’re in a race, not even paying attention to traffic lights.”
