On Monday afternoon (July 27), a powerful tornado swept through the northeast region of Wisconsin in the United States, causing strong winds that suddenly plunged the local sky into darkness and widespread destruction along its path, leading to over 30,000 people losing power supply. The National Weather Service (NWS) had previously issued a “particularly dangerous” tornado warning for the area.
The National Weather Service confirmed that the tornado passed through Lake Winnebago around noon on Monday and moved south, primarily hitting the Appleton and Menasha areas. The strong winds caused numerous trees to fall, cars to overturn, and some houses to suffer severe damage, with twisted metal debris scattered on highways and city streets.
Additionally, due to power lines collapsing, there was a large-scale power outage in the area. Approximately 18,000 users in Menasha were left without power, with over 30,000 households and businesses in the state experiencing outages at one point. Winnebago County Executive Gordon Hintz stated that restoring power in the affected areas might take several days.
As of Monday evening, there have been no reports of casualties received by officials, but rescue and clearing of roads in the disaster area are still ongoing. Authorities have opened emergency shelters at local churches to accommodate affected residents.
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers subsequently issued a statement, saying that the state government is prepared to provide necessary assistance to the affected communities at any time.
Regarding the cause of this natural disaster, National Weather Service meteorologist Scott Berschback explained that recent high temperatures and humidity in the Great Lakes region have accumulated energy for a large storm system, resulting in the formation of this tornado.
