Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued an order on Monday, August 3, to relieve Olha Stefanishyna of her duties as Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States.
Stefanishyna was appointed as the Ambassador to the US by Zelensky in late August 2025, serving for less than a year. Since mid-July, when the unexpected reshuffling of the Ukrainian government began, there have been speculations about Stefanishyna’s potential resignation.
In a Facebook post on Monday, she stated that her resignation was “my own decision, for personal reasons…” and mentioned that she achieved significant accomplishments during her tenure.
Stefanishyna wrote in her post, “Representing Ukraine in Washington while this country is fighting for its survival has been the greatest honor of my life.”
“Wherever I can continue to make a difference, I will keep serving Ukraine and striving for our victory,” she added.
Zelensky did not provide reasons for relieving Stefanishyna of her duties, nor has he announced her successor.
Stefanishyna’s departure comes amid recent changes in high-ranking Ukrainian officials, including the replacement of the Prime Minister and Minister of Defense. It is expected that Ukraine will also make adjustments to positions within the diplomatic department, including ambassadorial roles.
Ukraine’s public broadcaster Suspilne reported last week citing Stefanishyna’s comments to reporters in Washington that Zelensky did not request her resignation.
She also mentioned on Facebook that she will address other questions raised by the media regarding her personal situation.
Several Ukrainian media outlets had previously reported that she informed Zelensky last month of her intention to resign. These reports mentioned that she had been under investigation by the national anti-corruption bureau for alleged irregularities in her asset declaration.
