Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD recalled over 210,000 vehicles on September 17th and 18th due to risks of spare tire detachment and safety hazards related to the brake pedal.
The State Administration for Market Regulation of China announced on September 18th on its official website that BYD Auto Industry Co., Ltd. and BYD Auto Co., Ltd. would recall 183,211 Qin and Tang series vehicles manufactured between 2014 and 2022.
The announcement stated that the recall was initiated due to manufacturing issues that led to abnormal batch variations of the brake pedal stopper material. After prolonged use, the stopper may crack and break. In extreme cases, the stopper may detach, causing the brake pedal to keep the brake light on without being pressed, sending incorrect signals to the rear and posing safety hazards.
BYD authorized dealers to replace the improved stoppers on the recalled vehicles free of charge to eliminate safety concerns.
On the previous day, September 17th, BYD recalled 32,000 Shark 6 plug-in hybrid electric pickup trucks in Australia due to the risk of spare tire detachment, which could endanger other road users.
This recall involves all Shark 6 models, including the Premium, Performance, and Dynamic Cab Chassis versions, with production dates ranging from August 29, 2024, to June 15, 2026.
By 2025, BYD had already recalled over 210,000 vehicles, including nearly 7,000 plug-in hybrid SUVs. While the recalls in 2026 were mainly due to manufacturing and installation defects in mechanical components, the 2025 recalls were related to design flaws and battery safety risks.
In addition, the State Administration for Market Regulation of China also announced on September 18th that NIO Automobile Technology (Anhui) Co., Ltd. would recall 686 Firefly electric vehicles produced between March 20 and April 2 this year.
It is reported that these recalled vehicles may experience interference between the steering column torque sensor wiring harness and the sensor rotor due to abnormal fluctuations in the manufacturing process. In extreme cases, this interference could lead to sensor signal anomalies, the failure of the electronic steering system warning light to illuminate, loss of power steering assistance, and safety risks.
