In the latest industry data from the United States, Burger King has surpassed Wendy’s in terms of sales figures, reclaiming its position as the second largest burger chain in America after six years of trailing behind this competitor.
Burger King took six years to make a comeback, and its road to success can be attributed to various improvements including operational adjustments, marketing initiatives, and store renovations.
These efforts have allowed Burger King to replace Wendy’s and once again become the second largest burger chain brand in the United States, with McDonald’s still firmly holding the top spot.
Wendy’s has reported a continuous decline in same-store sales in the United States for six consecutive quarters. The company reported on Friday (August 7) that its domestic same-store sales for the most recent quarter dropped by 7%.
Meanwhile, Burger King has been implementing its business turnaround plan, with its U.S. same-store sales rising for five consecutive quarters. The company reported on Thursday that its second-quarter U.S. same-store sales increased by 8.5%.
McDonald’s continues to maintain its industry-leading position with a significant advantage. While this fast-food giant only reports its global system-wide sales, according to data from Barclays Bank, in 2024, it held about 48% of the market share in the American burger market, while Wendy’s had only 11.4% and Burger King had 10%.
A few years ago, Wendy’s quickly surpassed Burger King to claim the second spot nationwide after successfully launching breakfast items. However, maintaining this position has not been easy. Especially with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with subsequent supply chain issues that led to a significant increase in food costs. Subsequently, consumers began to resist the rising menu prices, reducing their spending at restaurants.
At the end of 2022, Burger King formulated a new strategy for its U.S. operations, focusing on improving food quality, increasing marketing investments, renovating restaurants, and achieved significant results. The company ultimately turned losses into profits, once again surpassing its main competitor, Wendy’s.
