The title in English: “Previously Criticized Xi Jinping as a Dictator, Hebei Teenager Zhang Qiyuan is Safe”

Last year, Hebei teenager Zhang Qiyuan, who went missing after opposing Xi Jinping in a live broadcast, recently confirmed his safety through a video shared by activists in the democracy movement circle. He claimed to have been detained in a mental hospital and a special school, and threatened by police with batons.

On June 17, activist Jie Libuilding, who is currently in the United States, stated on X that 15-year-old Zhang Qiyuan from Hebei openly denounced the communist dictatorship of the Chinese Communist Party last year, calling Xi Jinping a dictator, and promptly disappeared. Yesterday, he suddenly checked in through Jie Libuilding’s X account.

The video provided by Jie Libuilding shows Zhang Qiyuan recounting that since posting a statement declaring he would not commit suicide, he was held at the Sixth People’s Hospital of Baoding City in Hebei for several months, and then transferred to Chunyu School in Baoding, Hebei for continued illegal detention. He mentioned that police frequently threatened him with batons at the detention facilities, with the police code FJ0141 (probably an auxiliary police officer).

Public records show that the Sixth People’s Hospital of Baoding City is a tertiary grade A psychiatric hospital. Chunyu School in Baoding is a specialized school (with a focus on special education), primarily catering to students with behavioral issues or in need of corrective education.

Jie Libuilding stated that Zhang Qiyuan asked him to release the video to appeal for continued attention, providing him with a bit more help for safety and putting more pressure on the persecutors. He hopes that everyone will continue to pay attention to the safety of the young anti-communist Zhang Qiyuan in China.

On July 12, 2025, Taiwanese anti-communist internet celebrity Bajiong posted a video on overseas social media in which Hebei youth Zhang Qiyuan sought help from him. Zhang Qiyuan was summoned by the local police station after questioning the host in a live broadcast, “Do you think Xi Jinping is a dictator?” He then issued a statement declaring he would not commit suicide or compromise. Zhang Qiyuan went missing afterwards.
